1.Watch the Peach Drop in Atlanta

The star attraction for visitors and locals alike in Atlanta on New Year’s Eve is the annual Peach Drop. Held at Underground Atlanta every year since 1989, the Peach Drop is the largest New Year’s Eve event in the Southeast. Admission to the event is free. The headliner for 2012 is the rock group Kansas who has been playing since releasing their hit records in the ‘70s. Bring your 2012 garb and noisemakers to join the more than 100,000 expected partygoers gathered in the streets of Atlanta from Peachtree Street to MLK, Jr. Drive. The festivities begin at noon on December 31st with lots of family oriented activities, including carnival rides and face painting. However, these activities end by 6 p.m., which is an ideal time to end the evening if you have younger children.

The large crowd and often intoxicated partygoers make for an inappropriate atmosphere for children. Most eateries in Atlanta close by 9 on New Year’s Eve, but event vendors will sell food and drinks, as well as alcoholic beverages, at the location of the Peach Drop. After the Peach Drop at midnight, venture out to the bar scene that will be hopping until 4 a.m. Keep in mind most of the streets will be blocked in the area, and parking will be almost impossible. The ideal method of transportation is to arrive early via MARTA while parking your vehicle in a MARTA parking lot. Then at the end of the event, you can take MARTA until 2 a.m. when it stops running; plan to take a taxi to your car if you are planning on partying on through the morning.
