South City Kitchen has been heating up the Atlanta scene with their contemporary southern cuisine since 1993. The popular restaurant is located in two locations, Midtown and Vinings. Both are designed with sophistication and a homely style. The menu offers a wide range of southern favorites and generational recipes. The people of Atlanta venture to the Fifth Group Restaurant to enjoy “Down South” classics that are plated with elegance.

Tennessee Catfish

There are a variety of appetizers on the menu. Some of these appetizers include crab cakes, chicken livers, fried tomatoes, potato dumplings, and pork barbecue. Plated with delicacy is Tennessee catfish, apple-fennel slaw, and a Mississippi comeback sauce. The catfish is deep fried until a southern crunch is created, and it’s mounted on a bed of apple-fennel slaw. The sweet slaw consists of thinly sliced green apples, fennel, chives, and carrots. Then the Mississippi comeback sauce, which is orange in color, is drizzled down the middle of the masterpiece. The sauce is smooth, tangy, and absolutely delicious. The Tennessee Catfish is considered an appetizer, but it’s a perfect way to kick off a southern meal. I’m a strong lover of catfish, so I would definitely order this dish again. It’s a light option that the fish fans will love.

Biscuits & Cornbread

Who doesn’t enjoy a fresh basket of bread? South City Kitchen provides their customers with homemade buttery biscuits and golden sweet cornbread. There is nothing better than having options. If you’re a bread lover, then you can pick your favorite from the two choices. The bread compliments most of their signature entrees as well. Some of the specialty entrees include: buttermilk fried chicken, shrimp and grits, Georgia trout, smoked pork chops, pan-roasted duck, and filet mignon. Each of the entrees are freshly prepared and artistically designed for presentation.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken

For the entrée, I chose the famous buttermilk fried chicken, garlic collard greens, and smoky macaroni and cheese. The fried chicken is phenomenal; it’s juicy and seasoned perfectly. Then the collard greens are cooked slowly with garlic and special spices. Plated adjacently to the collards is the macaroni and cheese. They are creamy, and served with a syrupy brown sauce that compliments the spicy flavor. Everything blends together nicely, and it reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking. The dishes will make you feel warm and happy on the inside. Their atmosphere is inviting, and the cuisine will leave you speechless.

I would consider South City Kitchen an upscale restaurant that creates some of the best homemade dishes. For nearly two decades, they have provided their customers with intimate dining and fresh recipes. If you want a taste of traditional southern cuisine, then South City Kitchen will satisfy your cravings.
