America is probably the number one country when it comes to barbecue, because we love meat and we love to barbecue! However, we are not the only country with a passion for grilling meat. Other countries also barbecue but vary and style and taste. Song Do BBQ is a Korean restaurant that specializes in the traditional style of barbecuing. Me and a couple of my international friends decided to head to Song Do’s for dinner one night and experience Korean barbecue for the first time.
Song Do BBQ food I was not sure what to expect when I first walked in. Was it going to be setup like some cheesy kungfu movie? Was I going to have act and behave as if I was in some type of anime? We walked into the restaurant and were greeted by a seemingly kindhearted elderly Korean woman. She showed us to a small room big enough for only four people. The room was fixed with a table that had two large grills fixed into the table. The waitress started up the grills as they were electric and not heated by coal and she then showed us a menu which listed the type of combinations that could be ordered.
Since this was a barbecue, only meat was served. This in my opinion is how a barbecue should be. The choices ranged from lowest to highest: ruby, sapphire, and gold. They each came with a different combination of meat, with gold having the highest quality such as sirloin. We ordered the ruby since this was our first time and we were not sure of what to expect. We sat at the table and no longer than five minutes, we were introduced with utensils and different dipping sauces for the meat.
Song Do BBQ Outside View The dipping sauces consisted of a bean paste, a tangy sauce, and a type of sesame sauce. We were also given a bowl of soup and a bowl of rice. The bowl of soup was delicious and yet left my taste buds confused at times. First the soup had a nice salty taste, followed later by a spicy sting which came from the jalapenos. Or sometimes it would be the other way around depending on the amount of soup and the amount of ingredients.
Song Do BBQ More Food As I was halfway done the soup, the waitress came with two nice big platters of meat, and yes, the meat looked heavenly. One platter was simply piled high with cuts of beef and the other was piled high with some cuts of pork and thick cuts of bacon. We quickly placed the meat on the grill evenly and immediately the smell of the meat cooking started a typhoon in my mouth. The beef cooked a bit faster than the pork, so we were able to taste it sooner than the pork. I took a piece of the cooked beef and dipped it into bean paste, and it was simply an amazing combination! The sensation of tasting something that I have never tasted before was simply mind blowing. I tried the other two sauces and each brought out a different type of flavor from the meat.
Finally the pork was ready to be eaten and I repeated the dipping process with both the cut pork and the thick bacon. I can honestly say that the thick cut bacon is the best out of the three. It was nice and juicy with a rich burst of flavor.
My Chinese friend taught me a way to make a type of Korean bbq burrito. First you take a nice piece of lettuce, line it up with a type of green leafy herb which they provide for you, and then you lay a few pieces of meat on top followed by any dipping sauce that you prefer. It was a grand combination as it was a mouthful of delicious flavors complimenting each other.
After our third serving of meat, we were all totally stuffed and 100% satisfied. Everyone was slumping in their chairs and rubbing their stomachs with a smile on their face, a clear sign of complete satiation. Finally we had to get up from our table and pay our bills which came out to be around thirty dollars each. It was a meal worth every penny and an experience I will definitely try to repeat.
