Walk by the window of Miss Mamie’s Cupcakes and Such just off the Marietta Square and you are sure to be lured in by the sight of sweet confectionary delight, but unfortunately looks can be deceiving.  I had such high hopes for Miss Mamie’s cupcakes.  Six of their cupcakes were sitting at home in my freezer.  I had received them as a birthday gift from a coworker and now that I know that they ran him about $30 I feel bad for sticking them in the freezer to begin with!  (My plan was to save them for a rainy, romantic comedy style emergency day.)  With flavors like cinnabun, red velvet, smores, and more, I thought surely they could brighten up even the worst day, however, after my experience at the actual shop those cupcakes were tossed out!

Quick Review
  • Service 1/5- There’s no point in selling something sweet if you are going to be rude.
  • Food 2/5- Order something to drink to go with your cupcake…you are going to need it!
  • Atmosphere 2/5- Again it looks nice, but there’s nothing really under the façade.
  • Price 3/5- At $6 for two cupcakes, I could have made two dozen at home.
Miss Mamie’s has certainly built a reputation for itself in Marietta.  I mean after all they did win the Food Network Cupcake Wars Challenge with their now best selling Margarita cupcake.  They certainly offered an interesting variety with their other competition entries such as pistachio/white chocolate cupcake with pistachio/pesto filling and rose water meringue icing or the an eclair/cinnamon cupcake with pastry-cream filling and Nutella buttercream icing.

Not to mention the cannoli chocolate cupcake with tangerine ricotta filling and chocolate ganache icing that comes with carmelized tangerine and tuile cookie garnis.  While these flavors look and sound like they would be delightful, my experience at Miss Mamie’s definitely fell short of a first place prize.

This visit fell flat from the moment I walked through the door.  One of my close friends was having a professional and personal nightmare of a day and nothing says I care like a cupcake and some coffee.  Miss Mamie’s atmosphere seemed perfect with its quaint and quirky tearoom style setting, however, the counter attendant seemed almost bothered by the idea that we had entered.  They clearly have a dining facility set up with limited booths for escaping the heat of a Georgia afternoon, so it is unclear to me why you would set up booths if you did not want your customers to actually stay!

The cashier, because attendant implies that she actually attend to something, was also less than helpful when it came to selecting our cupcakes.  This is unfortunate given the wide variety of cupcakes Miss Mamie’s offers, not to mention that they rotate their cupcakes out frequently.  Trying to keep the coconut lemon separate from the Guinness cupcakes isn’t exactly a dilemma that you face at every restaurant you visit.

When asked to repeat the names/flavors of the cupcakes that she whizzed through to begin with the cashier seemed genuinely disgruntled as if these were common flavors and my friend and I should be able to recognize them.  And when my friend asked what the best selling flavor cupcake was, the cashier’s facial expression literally implied “You should know.”

It took all I had to not apologize in advance to her for not knowing of her legendary margarita cupcake.

We ultimately decided that since our presence during business hours was such an inconvenience we would order our cupcakes and depart.   I personally opted for a chocolate peanut butter cupcake while I believe my friend went for the Margarita.  I didn’t even bother to sample the Margarita because quite frankly it’s a bright green that reminded me of Slimer from Ghostbusters and I happen to not like Margaritas.

However, I certainly hope that it was better than the chocolate peanut butter cupcake.  This cupcake was definitely not worth $3.  It was literally so dry that I almost started choking on it.  I attempted to pretend I liked it before my friend raised one eyebrow at me and asked if I was enjoying my cupcake.  As an honest person, I responded “Miss Mamie’s cupcakes aren’t quite my cup of tea,” and to my surprise my friend responded “Me either!”  We both promptly deposited $6 of cupcakes into the nearest trashcan.
My advice to any person in search of sweets in Marietta is to check elsewhere.  It’s almost certain that $6 can find you a better sweet somewhere else and it will certainly find you a sweeter attitude!
