Memorial Day things to do in Atlanta - Memorial weekend Guide
With the approach of the Memorial Day weekend, it's time to turn our attention to the many events that will be happening. From the traditional remembrance ceremonies to the festivals, there's plenty to do no matter what your mood. Here is a brief guide to the upcoming attractions.
Kennesaw Mountain:
On Sunday and Monday, the Visitor Center at Kennesaw Mountain will be showing artillery demonstrations and cannon firings on the hour from 11am to 3pm. Inside the center you can learn more about the history of the mountain and the battles that occurred in the area. Then, take the short hike up the mountain to the best view of the Atlanta skyline.Atlanta Caribbean Festival:
If you like the islands, or the magic of Carnival, then you'll want to go to Dobbs Plaza on Auburn Avenue this Saturday at noon for the Atlanta Caribbean Festival. There will be a parade through the city, followed by plenty of Soca artists and Caribbean food for you to enjoy. It's a great festival to dance the night away.Veterans Remembrance Day:
The Atlanta History Center will be having their Veteran’s Remembrance Day on Sunday. Veterans from World War II and onward will be there to share their experiences with the public. Living history actors will portray earlier wars and show authentic dress and equipment from those eras. General admission is $16.50 for adults.Memorial Day Jam:
On Monday May 28th at Heritage Green in Sandy Springs, you can enjoy classic and Southern rock bands at the Memorial Day Jam. Doors open at 3pm, rain or shine. The bands playing this year are Tommy Talton, Wet Willie, and Atlanta Rhythm Section.Stone Mountain:
Stone Mountain Park kicks off their summer festivities with an extended fireworks display and musical tribute in honor of the troops after their Lasershow Spectacular. Arrive early in the day and you can try their all-new Geyser Towers adventure course, Sky Hike or Summit Skyride. Or take the trail up to the top and enjoy the view! Tickets vary per event, but the laser show and fireworks are free with $10 vehicle admission to the park.Roswell Remembers:
Roswell Remembers is the largest Memorial Day ceremony in Georgia, attracting around 7,000 people. It's a non-political, non-commercial event. This year's featured speaker is Major General David R. Bockel, Retired. The event starts at 10 AM at 617 Atlanta St. in Roswell on Memorial Day. Food and music will be available after the ceremonies.Your local public pool:
For many Metro children, the best thing about Memorial Day is their local pool opening up for the season. Atlanta has many public pools available, and it’s a great way for your children to make new friends over the summer. There’s too many to list here, but a simple Google Maps search will bring them up. Just search for “Atlanta public pool.”Atlanta Braves Memorial Day Salute:
Before the 1:10 p.m. Monday game vs. the Philadelphia Phillies, soldiers from Moody, Dobbins and Robins Air Force bases and Fort Gordon will give a Memorial Day presentation. Fallen soldiers and Purple Heart recipients will be honored, fighter jets will fly over, and Maj. Gen Michael Ferriter will throw out the first pitch. Baseball and patriotism go very well together! From solemn to sassy, there's plenty of events to do across Atlanta during the weekend to celebrate the occasion. Take some time this weekend to both remember the fallen and celebrate the start of the Summer. Have fun this weekend, and stay safe!
