If you are in the Vinings area in search of a bit of ale and bite to eat, Meehanâs Public House is the place for you. Their tag line says it all “Irish Customs. Neighorbood Charm.”
Meehan’s has always been one of my favorite spots in the Vinings area, in part because it was within walking distance of my home and in part because of the amazing atmosphere. This isn’t your typical Irish bar. They have the most comfortable clean booths you ever seen, nothing like the cheap, often sticky ones that all too often occupy busy restaurants. They also have the most beautiful outside bar you’ve ever seen. It’s cool and quaint with an overhead trellis complete with romantically interwoven vines. Honestly, this would be a great date spot.

The atmosphere alone isn’t what will win you over. Chef Brandon Holte, has taken Irish bar food to a completely different level. You will find all the foods you’ve come to know and love on bar menus at Meehan’s only here, you will find them done right! Take for example nachos. These aren’t your typical dump a punch of salsa, chips, and cheese nachos. At Meehan’s they are served with either chicken or chili. They come with quite possibly the best queso in town. Then they are smothered with jalapenos, chipotle salsa, pico, sour cream, black beans, corn, and just a touch of lettuce. They pretty much a meal within themselves and the portion is definitely big enough for sharing.

If you are a little more health conscious Meehan’s has some great salads too. The Citrus Salad is pretty great. It’s a spring mix, with almonds, asiago cheese, and Granny Smith apples. Who doesn’t love Granny Smith Apples? It also comes with a great citrus vinaigrette.
While appetizers and salads are all good and well, the entrees at Meehan’s will make you kiss the Chef and it won’t have anything to do with him being Irish. If you don’t try the Meatloaf, you will regret it. This ain’t Mrs. Brady’s ground beef loaf. It’s bison, beef, and sausage combine married together in a mouthwatering loaf. It also comes with green beans. Oh, and don’t forget the red wine gravy. You haven’t had gravy until you’ve had red wine gravy. The Meat Trio is also pretty amazing, although, it’s a special and not traditional menu item. Smoked chicken wings, pork, and fried wings… served with dipping sauces. Once you’ve had smoked wing, you will never eat them another way.

Meehan’s also has a great selection of burgers that come with your choice of any of their sides. The sides include items like Vidalia Onion Rings, Southern Style Slaw and for the true Irish cuisine lover, Irish Soda Bread. If you are looking for a burger you won’t find on any other menu, definitely go for the Meehan’s House Burger. It’s WisPride Cheddar and Applewood Bacon. This burger is sans a bun and is actually served on an English muffin. For the protein hardy, there’s also the Farmstead Burger. If a BLT married a hamburger, this would be their baby. It’s a bison burger with fried egg, cheddar, and bacon, lettuce, and tomato.
If you happen to stop by on a non-work day, there are two things at Meehan’s that you have to sample, the Irish coffees and the brunch. Brunch is only offered on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00-3:00 am. It’s filled with some great items like “The Full Monty” Breakfast. An egg, banger (sausage), ham, peppers, jalapenos, onions, hash browns, cheddar, pico, avocado and sour cream fresh from the skillet. You might also go for the eggs benedict. Meehan’s has some of the best poached eggs, served with ham and hollandaise of course.
The Irish coffees require you to be off the clock because of course they have alcohol in them. They make a great liquid dessert or even a nice way to spend the afternoon sipping and chatting. The Nuttty Irishman is a personal favorite. It’s bailey, amaretto, and coffee. If you enjoy citrus you might like the Café L’Orange, which is basically Grand Marnier mixed into coffee. I’ve also heard from others that the Dark Chocolate-Hazelnut Coffee is not to be missed. It’s Thatcher’s Dark Chocolate, Hazelnut, & Coffee mixed together.
Regardless of if you are in the mood for spirits, brunch, or dinner, Meehan’s Public House is the place to go. The atmosphere will draw you in, the food will keep you coming back.
Quick Review
- Atmosphere 5/5- I originally stopped by this place because their outside bar was so beautiful
- Food 5/5- I’ve never had a disappointing culinary experience.
- Service 4/5- This is one place you won’t have to hunt down your server.
- Price 4/5- Some items are a little on the spendy side, but nothing that will break the bank.
