If you drive down South Marietta Parkway in the morning, you are bound to notice one thing…the enormous amount of traffic.  However, another noteworthy and perhaps better way to start your day is by noticing Douceur de France French Bakery and Café located at the corner of South Marietta Parkway and Powder Springs Road.

I must say that on a rainy and dismal morning this place was a real pick me up.  The quaint space is an ode to a true Parisian café.  The interior decorator has sublime taste and has created an environment that you will want to stay and have breakfast or lunch in.  The minute you walk in your eyes are automatically drawn to the display cases filed with fresh baked bread and pastries.  The lighting creates a picturesque feel that only helps to draw you in.

Review
Atmosphere 4/5- You will come for the food and stay for the atmosphere here.
Service 5/5- Friendly; knowledgeable; committed staff.
Price 4/5- extremely reasonable for the product that you are getting
Food 4/5- You will leave here with a full tummy and probably a to go pastry.

As you peruse the pastry display case, it is very obvious that each of the employees at Douceur de France takes real pride in his or her work.  The bakers were busily filling the display cases.  Through conversation, I learned that they arrive to work at 4:30 in the morning each day to begin creating the fresh selection of pies, tarts, and quiches.  You don’t get out of bed that early unless you really love your work.  The front of house staff is equally knowledgeable and polite.  Douceur de France is one of the many establishments that has a minimum total purchase in order to use your debit card.  In their case it is $10.  I am not a huge breakfast eater.  Ten dollars of breakfast would keep me full for the day.  Even worse though, I rarely have cash.

Douceur de France French Bakery Croissant

On the day that I ventured into Douceur, I really only wanted a croissant.  Nothing cures the rainy day blues like buttery, flaky, bread.  Since my grand total was $1.80, I was in quite a bind, and bless her heart the cashier gave me my breakfast.  When I offered to find an ATM and return, her polite sentiment of “You aren’t coming back in here for $1.80, but do come back for lunch,” genuinely touched me.  It also motivated me to find the nearest ATM ASAP. Don’t worry, I did return and give her the $1.80. So I took away two valuable lessons that day: (1) learn to keep more than .38 ¢ in your pocket, and (2) the staff at Douceur de France love their customers as much as their work.

The food at Douceur de France will not disappoint.  The breakfast menu offerings are substantial.  For the more hearty eater, they offer three egg omelets with a croissant.  You also have your choice of a plethora of omelet additions to include: praga ham, smoked turkey, marinated chicken, bacon, brie, asparagus, or goat cheese, just to name a few.  The Paninis Salmon is also next on my list of brunch items to try.  Don’t default to think of a Panini sandwich.  This paninis is two poached eggs on smoked salmon that is covered with fresh tomato and Hollandaise.  It comes with a serving of French style hash browns as well. Of course you can’t visit a French café without trying the French toast or as it is referred to at Douceur de France, le pain perdu.

It brioche dipped in crème brulee batter and its served with banana strawberry coulis and whipped cream.  The lunch offerings include your standard salads and sandwiches.  The chicken pot pie is definitely  a stand out with it’s parmesan cream sauce. The soups and stews at Café de Douceur  could easily steal the show.  One of the items that really grabbed my attention was the Beef Mode.  It’s a beef stew that comes with your choice of starch, so some form of bread or rice.  The stew itself has beef, bacon, wine, carrots, onions, and potatoes.  That’s sure to warm you up!

If you are trying to satisfy your sweet tooth, Douceur de France has a abundance of pastries, some of which are too cute to eat.  While scanning the display case, I came across a strawberry, whip cream swan tart.  I almost bought it, before I realized it was simply too lovely to eat.  I also noticed the crème brulee, tiramisu, and Napoleons, which also looked quite appetizing .
