Atlanta has a very large Hispanic population, and they've
brought in their cuisine to all corners of the city. Most are near the
Perimeter, but even in downtown Atlanta there are a few locations that
are worth checking out. The next time you're cruising down the
connector, swing by and check one one of these Mexican restaurants in
Downtown.
LottaFrutta Mexican food
1.Alma Cocina
Alma Cocina specializes in modern
Mexican and Latin American cuisine, putting new spins on old favorites.
There's a lot of fine-dining panache added to standard Mexican dishes.
Try their Crispy Cod Taquitos, made with cabbage slaw, pickled
jalapeños, and passion fruit vinegar as an appetizer. The Rock
Shrimp Huaraches have an interesting blend of flavors: orange, charred
avocado, smoked tomatoes, chilies, and green onions. If you're looking
for the latest spins on Mexican food, this is the place to go.
2.Baja Fresh Mexican Grill
Take something like a Moe's or a Willy's (work with me here)
and picture how it might have been at the first store they opened.
Baja Fresh Mexican
Grill is like that. It's fast food Mexican, but with
different combinations of toppings and a bit more variety. If you like
fish tacos, Baja has mahi mahi on the menu, which is something that
Moe's and Willy's definitely lack. Very good if you need a quick
on-the-go hit of Mexican food, and miles above Moe's.
Located off of Edgewood Ave, this place was featured in USA
Today as a great place to buy a burrito. The shop started out when a
local favorite, Tortilla's, closed down. A professor at Morehouse
decided to host a burrito night that served similar burritos. This
proved to be so popular that a restaurant was founded soon afterward.
The menu is quite simple, and you're not going to find haute cuisine
here. What you will get are huge burritos that are addictive. They also
serve Mexican Coke, if you like cane sugar cokes.
LottaFrutta serves a completely different kind of Latin
cuisine. Unlike the normal heaviness of Mexican food, this shop focuses
on serving specialty fruit cups, smoothies, and light sandwiches with
Latin twists. Their Limonatta cup is a cup of fresh cantaloupe,
cucumber, coconut, pineapple, watermelon, papaya, and mango, sprinkled
with lime juice and chile guajillo. I don't know of any other place in
the city that serves such a unique fresh-fruit dish. You can get
guanabana and lulo smoothies, and they have a crazy-good vegetable
sandwich. It's definitely a Mexican restaurant in Atlanta that's out of
the ordinary!
It's a food truck, and one that serves extremely unique
food! This Mexican-Korean fusion machine will set your taste buds to a
whole new realm of flavor. It's also cheap at around $5 per meal! Try
the sliders made with pulled pork, cucumber kimchee sesame-salad, and
Mexican cheese. This truck does travel, so check out the website to see
if it'll be stopping in your area soon.
