As you approach the door of the Après Diem Café Bistro, well you actually walk through the outdoor seating area first, which kind of puts you in the mind of one of those French Cafés you might see in a movie. The atmosphere of the overall restaurant is dark and somewhat mysterious; you might find yourself gazing around at the groups of people eating, drinking and socializing and wonder how they all came to be. The dark tone of the restaurant makes it a great first date spot or even better, a great spot for your first kiss! If you’re into an eclectic environment, this location is perfect for you.

Incidentally, once you’re standing at the Host stand waiting to be seated, you will see the main dining area to your right. This area is dimly lit, which contributes to creating a more romantic experience. Yet, the bar area to your immediate left gives off a more lively energy with people standing around drinking, and laughing sociably. As you walk in a bit further past the bar- you will find the DJ-nestled in his little corner with passerby’s eagerly wanting to know what the last song was.

The music is outstanding; it places you in another place and time-somewhere cultures and classes merge over cocktails and compositions. Après Diem offers a range of other music as well; every Wednesday is live Jazz and every second Tuesday of the month they feature Salsa. That’s what makes this spot so unique; it has a little bit of everything catering to a variety of tastes.

Further toward the back of the restaurant is a cozy lounge area where the works of local artist’s hang on the walls. No run-of-the-mill artwork here and yes, the works are for sale. The artist’s works also change every so often-to continue to provide something new for the patrons. I’m able to take you on this visual journey because this is one of my favorite bars to hangout in, so I know it like the back of my hand. In fact, probably better, because I never look at the back of my hand! Just kidding, but I know this spot very well.

This brings me to the last area of the restaurant, the indoor-outdoor patio off to the side and toward the back of the lounge area; not to worry when it’s cold-they provide those heated area lamps and yes-they work! In the Spring/Summer months or whenever it gets hot enough, down comes the plastic covering and in comes the cool breeze or the sun, transforming the indoor patio into an outdoor patio.

They serve what they describe as being a “Traditional Continental Cuisine with an updated edge.” Be sure to visit them online to peruse the rest of the menu-they offer so much more than what I’ve mentioned here (http://www.apresdiem.com). A few of the dishes I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing during my visits to Après Diem were: the appetizer sized Crab Cake-and as a self-proclaimed “Foodie”-what made them so delicious is the sauce/dip they’re served with, it’s a uniquely flavored artichoke-basil tartar sauce. Sounds yummy, right?! Then there’s the classic Middle Eastern Hummus dip-although Hummus is quite a simple dish-it hardly tastes the same everywhere. I’ve also had the grilled Turkey Burger sandwich and the Salmon Ciabatta sandwich; ok, a sandwich is a sandwich right? Not at all, especially when you know how to bring out its flavor the way Après Diem does. They also offer a pretty extensive desert menu, but you have to drop in to check out what deserts they’re carrying from day-to-day or night-to-night.

So, when you’re thinking of somewhere new to visit for lunch, keep in mind they also have special eats for specific days (Or for Saturday/Sunday Brunch). For example, there’s Fish Taco Friday-not only is that my favorite day of the week, but it’s my favorite special day for Après Diem’s food specials too!  They’re located at the heart of Midtown, at 931 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, GA 30308-next to the historic Midtown Arts Cinema. I would also suggest taking in a movie either before or after your dining experience, to enjoy all of what the Midtown plaza has to offer.

Let me just say, if Facebook were a restaurant, this spot would be the closest to it. This eclectic dive is a global melting pot of buzzing socialites male and female alike, all standing around with either hand filled with a drink or a cigarette or both (yes, they still allow smoking here). Everyone is eating and talking and soaking up the cool sounds of the lounge music or the live DJ spinning his own unique brand of music-depending on which night it is. But, no matter what night you decide to drop in, you’ll wonder where this place has been hiding and why you didn’t drop in any sooner! Well, Bon Appétit!
